This perfect French toast recipe is made with brioche or challah bread. It is absolutely ideal for a nice quiet breakfast on the weekend or brunch with company! Unbelievably easy to make, and a real winner in our family. Simple and elegant.

Tips

-Use the correct amount of milk: If there’s too much milk, the custard won’t cook properly, and the bread will end up soggy.

Bread: The slices should be about 3/4-1-inch thick.   Brioche or challah are ideal for making French toast, but any sturdy bread, that won’t fall apart during cooking, will also work.

Custard: Mix the eggs and milk thoroughly, until it turns a nice light yellow color.

-Soaking the bread: Soak the slices, one at a time, for 15-20 seconds per side.  If the bread is really fresh, you may want to toast it slightly (on low), before dipping the slices into the egg mixture.  Just note, that the amount of time needed for dipping into the egg mixture, may increase if using dry bread.

Preheat the pan: On medium high heat, preheat your skillet. A hot skillet will start to cook the egg custard immediately, preventing the French toast from turning soggy.

-Serve while still hot: Add a little butter, warm maple syrup, or sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar. Enjoy!

Variations:

1) Add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard. To keep the cinnamon from clumping up in the egg mixture, take the cinnamon and mix it with a little bit of milk to form a paste before adding it in.

2) Use your favorite flavored coffee creamer in place of the milk.

3) My favorite way to serve French toast is with warmed maple syrup but there are other flavors of syrup available, like blueberry or strawberry that go well with fresh berries. Or simply dust with confectioners sugar.

Where to find Brioche Bread: Look down the bread isle at Trader Joe’s, Aldi’s or your local grocery store, as they usually have sliced brioche in stock.  Any thick sliced (white or wheat) bread, you have on hand, will also work in this recipe. If you like your French toast thicker, then look for an un-sliced loaf of Brioche.

  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk

  • Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Flip and cook another 3 minutes on the other side.
  • Transfer to a platter and keep warm. Wipe off the skillet and repeat the process with the remainder of the slices of brioche and egg mixture, until finished.

The brioche bread sure makes the French toast look impressive. I like to serve it when we have company.

I found brioche bread at Aldi’s. I keep it in the freezer just to use when making French toast. Anna
