This classic apple crisp dessert is warm and comforting just like my mom used make.

Prepped in 10 minutes and ready within an hour! The sliced apples are doused in cinnamon and sugar, then covered with a streusel topping. Serve it slightly warmed or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

It is by far one of my favorite desserts and reminds me of family dinners growing up.

This dessert can go by many different names depending on the region, such as Crumble, Cobbler, and Brown Betty. Each recipe uses the same basic ingredients but may have a different texture depending on the ingredients used to make the streusel topping.

Believe me, the smell of baked apples and cinnamon drifting throughout the house is just amazing.!

Tips:

Apples: When purchasing apples look for the heavier ones that are free of soft spots. A few varieties that hold their shape well in baked goods are: Empire, Granny Smith, Honey Crisp, Braeburn, and Cortland.

Topping: For a crumbly top, use cold butter, and try not to over mix the ingredients. The topping should be lumpy, if it is powdery then it’s been over mixed). Dark brown sugar can be substituted for the white sugar (or try a combination of white and brown sugar). The brown sugar will give it a more caramel like taste.

Nuts: For a new twist try adding 1/2-3/4 cup of coarsely chopped nuts to the topping. (walnuts or pecans work well)

Make ahead: Bake the apple crisp as directed, then let it cool, cover and refrigerate until the next day. It can be warmed, if desired, in the microwave or oven.

Gluten-Free: Substitute the flour with your favorite gluten free flour, available at most grocery stores or online.

Storage: 2-4 days
